Opening of Churchill Gardens Football Pitch

This week I attended the opening of a news maxi-pitch on the Churchill Gardens Estate in Pimlico. To mark the return of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Women's Champions League finals to London, and in recognition of the English Football Association's (FA) 150th anniversary, UEFA has donated the pitch the local community.

This is a new community facility, gifted from UEFA and the FA, which will be owned and managed by the community through the Churchill Gardens Community Pilot, which will be led by residents through a management committee to ensure it is used to the benefit of the community.

The pitch has been funded by the UEFA grassroots programme commemorating the UEFA Champions League Final in London and the 2013 UEFA Grassroots Day – an annual pan-European celebration of football.

This pitch will make a great contribution to our community and open more opportunities for our youth to get involved in football.

The pitch is open to the children within the community to use both through community groups and local schools during the week. The site was chosen to make a positive impact in the community and help engage young people and increase participation in sport where participation rates have been poor.
