NAO Update on Crossrail

Residents in the West End, who will feel the benefit of Crossrail when the services opens in 2018, but who will by then have suffered many years of disruption will welcome today’s report from the National Audit Office which finds that residents interests as taxpayers’ in the Crossrail programme has so far been well protected.

The National Audit Office report states “If progress in providing the new rail service for London and the South-East can be maintained and risks managed, then the programme is on course to achieve value for money.”

When complete, the line will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow Airport in the west, to Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the east, passing through the West End with a major hub interchange at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road which will deliver 24 trains per hour service at peak times in each direction.

Crossrail has a total budget of £14.8 billion to build the infrastructure.

According to today’s report, the strategic need for Crossrail has become clearer over time as increased population and employment growth in London have been forecast. The report also confirms that Crossrail’s benefits are expected to outweigh its costs, likely to exceed the original Department forecasts that Crossrail will bring £1.97 of transport benefits for every £1 of cost, and potential for it to bring wider economic benefits.

Today’s NAO report states that progress is just behind schedule, but the necessary steps have been taken to allow the NAO to be confident that the project will meet the planned delivery date. Forecast costs remain within available funding of £14.8 billion.
