Working To Deal With Beggars and Rough Sleeping Constructively

Begging and rough sleeping are a huge issue in our area, and my colleagues and I have been working to deal with these issues constructively.

Physical barriers have been erected to stop items being stored on top of the caretakers shed in Cavendish Square, and the police are dealing with those beggars that are part of organised crime.

All the local benches have now been screwed down as well, so they can’t be moved around, and they have also had divisions added to them so people are unable to sleep on them.

It is very important that residents and others give to charity as opposed to the individuals so that services can be made available for all those who need them.

Westminster City Council spends over £7m per year on rough sleeping – more than any other council in the country. Of course, it’s a bigger issue here, too, with people from all over the UK, mainland Europe and beyond, finding themselves sleeping rough.

To find out more about what is being done to deal with rough sleeping you can visit my article here.

Westminster City Council’s Hidden Network of Heroes

Westminster City Council spends over £7m per year on rough sleeping – more than any other council in the country. Of course, it’s a bigger issue here, too, with people from all over the UK, mainland Europe and beyond, finding themselves sleeping rough.

In response to the problem, Westminster City Council has launched the ‘Hidden Network of Heroes’ campaign to raise awareness of the work done to help more rough sleepers off the streets and turn their lives around. An army of staff and volunteers already helps rough sleepers who may be suffering mental illness, battling addiction, family breakdown or abuse, but without sufficient recognition.

The dedication of these staff and volunteers enables over 80% of rough sleepers to avoid a second night out. It’s worth noting that less than 3% of rough sleepers in Westminster have links to the area and 97% of those that engage with our services find their way off the streets for good.

The ‘Hidden Network of Heroes’ is a priority for Westminster Council. To find out more about the Hidden Network, the services available to rough sleepers and to donate please visit their website here.

Westminster Council has also recently set out a draft homelessness strategy, and you can find out more about this by visiting https://www.westminster.gov.uk/housing-strategies
